Had a little break from listening to First Aid Kit’s Wolf on repeat for a Radio Ethiopia day. This is my Dad’s favourite Patti album (mine is the more recent Gung Ho) and he finally got it on vinyl late last year. On the inner-sleeve I love that she cites ‘edie sedgewick, jim morrison, and the queen of sheba’ as influences for the song Poppies. And despite its title, track #4 Pissing In a River is the most heart-wrenching love song I have ever heard.
What more can I give you to make this thing grow?
Don’t turn your back now, I’m talking to you
Should I pursue a path so twisted?
Should I crawl defeated and gifted?
Should I go the length of a river
[The royal, the throne, the cry me a river]
Everything I’ve done, I’ve done for you
Oh I give my life for you.
Even more powerful on record.
