Exactly a week late, but Joan at the Liverpool Philharmonic, being perfect.
Her voice is just as other-worldly as it was in the sixties, but maybe with an edgier rasp which I loved and didn’t notice when I saw her two years ago in the very same room. The Dylan songs & stories were again met with the most applause but my favourite moment was the unexpected House of the Rising Sun, and then her classic closer Diamonds & Rust - the song she wrote about reuniting with Bob when he asked her to join his ’70s gypsy tour, the Rolling Thunder Revue, ten years after their folk romance in Greenwich Village.
In the original recording on her 1975 album of the same name, she sings Ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks, last Friday she updated it to Fifty years ago.. which made my stomach flip because I realised that even to this day she is still singing it to him.

I feel kind of bad that I just illegally downloaded all four discs of the charitable Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan… But whatever, when I’m famous I’ll totally do something for Amnesty International. Right after I’ve gone naked for PETA instead of wearing fur.
